BAE Systems is the world’s fourth largest arms producer. Drones such as the Taranis and MANTIS are developed and taxi tested at BAE’s site in Warton. Taranis, named after the Celtic God of thunder, consisted of a team including QinetiQ, GE Aviation and Rolls-Royce boasting speeds up to 700mph and stealth like no other UAV. This drone has no plans of being used by the UK military, but instead is being used to test technologies that may be used in future aircraft. On their website they state that ‘In the future, UAV’s are expected to replace manned attack aircraft.’ They go on to say, ‘While it is not for us to comment on how any customer deploys their equipment, we are ready and willing to support he UK Ministry of Defence on any work required to manage the operations of UAV’s.’
