RAF Croughton is the chosen sight for the $300m US intelligence-gathering hub. With direct links to GCHQ this site is also linked through cables to a base in Dijibouti where covert operations are carried out. This base in Dijibouti houses drones that operate in Yemen, southwest Saudi Arabia, Somalia, parts of Ethiopia and Southern Egypt. Many of these drone operations take place within unofficial war zones. This is argued to be in violation of international law but the U.S’s ‘Authorisation of the Use of Military Force’ claims to allow this as members of terrorist organisations operate in these countries. This makes it a grey area especially in the context of the UK’s involvement, as they do not operate in the same frameworks as the US.
