Blogger and secular writer-activist, Avijit, was murdered by machete-wielding assailants for his books and online writing on February 2015. From 2013 to 2016, a number of secularists and bloggers were killed or injured by assailants. In 2013, blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider was hacked to death. Shafiul Islam, Oyasiqur Rhaman, Ananta Bijoy Das, Niladri Chattopadhyay Niloy, Faisal Arefin Dipan and Nazimuddin Samad are among those killed in the subsequent years. Various Islamic militant outfits had taken credit for the murders on social media.
